internal speakers changes to digital out

My Macbook circa 2009 just started acting up with the speakers.  When I open the sound option the Output tab says "Digital Out" and I get no sound.  Then after a few seconds it changes to "Internal Speakers" and then starts playing sound.  It keeps changing on its own.
