keyboard ios 11

I have a keyboard problem with iOS 11. I hope nobody has already asked this & that I’m doing this correctly. When I first installed it on my iPad Air, the one-handed keyboard (the one where you flick the keys to get the alternate character), it worked like it should. I put it away, the screen locked—the usual. Later on, I picked it up to write a note & it looked the same, but it worked like the old keyboard. I looked up answers on a search engine & nothing looked like they said—both in settings & somewhere else (I forget where). Now I see a microphone instead of the emoji thing too. Yes, I did a hard reset & it didn’t do anything. Please help soon, it’s driving me nuts!
