two clicks by accident

All too often when I delete one mail message (in the left Mail pane on my MacBook Air) by clicking the trackpad on the Mail trash can icon, two messages are deleted. I don't always detect this, and even when I do, it is a pain.

I would like some way for me to adjust the timing between a single-click, a double-click, and two separate clicks.

This problem also shows up when trying to select a single word in a Numbers cell. Often the whole cell is selected rather than the single word.

I can find no way to adjust this timing, and it is a frustrating time-waster for me.

Does anyone else have this problem, or should I switch to a mouse that has a distinct 'click' to the buttons?
