I cannot delete apps after updating to ios11

The recent update to iOS 11 seemed to have gone smoothly for me.  However, I tried to delete an app from my iPads desktop and I could not get the ‘X’ to appear in the corner of the icon by touch-holding.  Is there a new way to delete apps or have I bungled something?  Thanks for any help!

update: I found that the icons now require a longer press / hold before deleting.  So I answered my own question
