Watch Series 3 Cellular and iPhone SE

The fine print on the Series 3 web page says "Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 11 or later."  The SE was launched after the 6, but the folks at the Apple Store told me that the cellular feature of the watch wouldn't work with my SE.  Is there any authoritative information on whether the SE will support the cellular feature of the Series 3 Watch?  Thanks.
