I am unable to modify songs on my nano using it...

I connected my nano to my Mac and used iTunes to try and sync music.  My nano appears, I click on it, and although it shows me the summary page indicating that there is content, I cannot see the content or modify the content.  I cannot sync the nano. I am using the latest version of iTunes on my Macbook Pro with the latest OS.  Any ideas as to what is going on?
