ios 10.3.2 bricked my Ipad air 2

Hi,

 

2 weeks back, after charging my Ipad (Air-2, 64gb, Cellular) to 100%, I watched a movie via the Netflix app. In the background, ios 10.3.2 was already downloaded and ready to install (update file got downloaded completely, 2 days prior). I was lazy to not update the ipad before, after watching the complete movie, I decided to let it get installed. As usual, it verified the download, and then the ipad turned off for the update procedure. I left the ipad on my bed, it had a charge of ~75% then, it wasn't connected to the power adapter.

 

After an hour or so, when I wanted to use the ipad again, I lifted it up and .... it won't start. Power button won't start the ipad, Power+Home button also wouldn't. On connecting it with ipad charger, it would start, apple logo would appear, and in 3 seconds again shut down, after 5 seconds restart again, then in 3 seconds shutdown again. It got stuck in an loop of restarting again and again. When I connected my iphone charger, ipad didn't power on at all. When I connected it to my macbook pro, even then it would not power on, Itunes didn't detect any ipad at all.

I got in touch with apple support, they told me about DFU mode.

I tried activating DFU mode on my ipad:-

Case 1: Disconnected from macbook and power adapter -- no response

Case 2: Connected to ipad charger -- DFU mode works, itunes logo appears on screen, asking me to connect the ipad to itunes. But the moment i take the charging cable out from the power adapter for connecting it with my macbook, ipad powers off, black screen. After connecting to macbook, again no resonse

Case 3: Connected to macbook pro -- Ipad in recovery mode was now detected by itunes - but no display on ipad screen. Message displayed by Itunes:-

I selected "Restore" option as the update option was disabled.

Itunes downloaded a 2.4gb (iPad_64bit_TouchID_10.3.2_14F89_Restore.ipsw) file, but then itunes got stuck showing the message "Waiting for ipad" and 15 minutes later threw an error code "4005" citing cannot connect to ipad. I tried connecting to other laptops using my other ipad cables all original apple accessories. But no result.

 

Finally I submitted it to apple service center in Kolkata,India (Systematix media, Ho Chi Minh Sarani, 700071). They charged INR1600 / USD25 (device out of warranty for 1 month, purchase date May-2016), upfront without any assurance of reviving the device. After 5 days they called me and told that their software treatment is not helping revive the ipad, and they don't open the ipad for repairing. They told me "Since our software treatment is not able to revive the ipad, the problem must be hardware related." Then i asked them "With no liquid spill, no electricity surge, no physical impact/shock, not even a micron scratch on the device, just by lying on the bed on its own, suddenly it developed a hardware issue ?Then tell me which part has got the problem" To which the agent replied "How would I know? i cannot open the device".

 

On top of this, the Ipad that i had originally bought (May-2016), within 6 months of use had developed an issue with the power button (unresponsive), for which the same service center had replaced the ipad(Jan-2017). This replacement ipad has now developed a hardware issue post ios 10.3.2 update. So,Within 13 months, 2 visits to service center for this particular purchase of mine. I should also mention that 2 other ipads with me are working fine for 3+ years now.

 

I don't want to pay the INR 24000/USD 372 for an older generation ipad replacement. Is there any other way to recover the device ?Anybody else facing similar issue post ios 10.3.2 upgrade ? Any leads would be much appreciated.

Contact Apple Support Apple Support (@AppleSupport) | Twitter and let them escalate the issue to the phone support staff. They may not be able to specifically solve your hardware issue, but they'll tell you the options.

I had a discussion with Apple Support India team. Surprised to know that Apple security updates are not mandatory to be installed - any faults arising due to a faulty upgrade cannot be held against Apple - I was told - "We didn't ask you to upgrade".

They mentioned, my old device will be repaired and sold as a refurbished unit outside India, but I have to shell out 24000INR for another new ipad. Serious ****** level 3rd grade service extended to Indian customers.



I had similar issue as above - no service, replace sim, follow Apple website instructions, Apple phone support, bricked phone, Apple store, told to replace phone with refurbished $400 AUD - then contacted Apple support twitter which at first was very responsive and careful not to encourage me to seek legal outcome (protected under Australian consumer law) but then ... nothing.

 

10 weeks later, phone still bricked

 

if you update your phone’s software following the instructions of Apple Phone support who even had access to my computer over the internet directing me...is it fair or to be expected to be left with a bricked phone AS A DIRECT RESULT?

 

of course it isn’t

 

This is CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR and disgusting considering the $300-400 for a ‘replacement’ as with above in India and my case in Australia is a lot of money when your phone did work (and on;y doesn’t because of a software update) but not very much for the largest company in the world whose single share price exceeds that of the replacement.

 

ABSOLUTE DISGRACE = 100% emblemic of the capitalist structures dominating our planet and societies ie profit motive is king and people and the environment be damned

 

PS I’ve only been a consumer of Apple products for 25 years and owned over a dozen macs, iPads, devices
