We just downloaded the newest iOS to an iPad 2 ...

We are helping an elderly person with this. I had to check with her. She did get a Hello screen and did enter a code. Thank you. She now remembers that she did it and what it was

Hi. No, there is no default password, but your settings should not have changed with the update.

Do you know what iOS version you installed?

Did you do it over WiFi, or using a computer?

Is it asking for a password (all characters) or a passcode (numbers only)?

Does this happen right when you start the iPad?

Do you see a screen with "Hello" in several languages?

OK. That's clear now. The Lock screen is asking for the passcode.

Are you certain it didn't ask you to create a passcode during the installation procedure? Apple is kind of keen on doing these things while they have your attention.

Great. You should (try to) tell her not to take any advice from a computer. They love to "recommend" changes to your use pattern, but they can get you in a heap of trouble. I always decline the suggested changes, because I can always implement them later if I want.
