Time Machine only shows backups of Applications...

I had an old used macbook pro running el capital and have a "new" used macbook pro. I had been backing up my macbook pro to an external hard drive using time machine. Now that I am trying to use the time machine backups to restore those files to my "new" macbook pro when I go into time machine using the other option to "browse other backup disks," I am able to see all my old backups, but when I try to go through the files in finder, the only files I am finding are applications. It won't let me even click documents or photos folders. The applications tab is the only folder I can click.

I tried using migration assistant. When I go into migration assistant and click my old user, I run into the problem that the mandatory "library" folder is too big for the amount of space available on the "new" macbook pro. I am including this information though because in the drop down menu under my username it shows the amount of space in each folder, and the amount of space under documents, photos, etc, seems correct, so it seems as if that stuff was indeed backed up and migration assistant is recognizing it, but since I cannot use migration assistant I need to move individual files.

I then tried using finder instead of migration assistant and time machine. With the hard drive attached, when I open my backups and go to the latest backup, then to users and to my username, my documents, photos, music folders, etc are not showing there at all.
