High capacity SD card not working in card slot

I am having issues using a a 200GB MicroSD card in my Macbook Air 13 inch card reader.

SanDisk Ultra 200GB MicroSDCX UHS-I card

Macbook Air 13 inch MID 2012

OSX yosemite 10.10.5

I have had this 200GB card for a week and been using it with my Nifty Minidrive. Previously I had been using a 64GC Micro SD card since Mid 2012 with no issues to date.

Since using this 200GB card a week ago it continuously unmounts itself, becomes corrupt and unreadable, unmountable, and throws all sorts of errors when I try copy data or even make a new folder. I have used disc utility about 20 times to re-mount, verify, repair and get it working. I have had to re-format it 6 times now and tried all different formats and even partitioning it but still having issues. Ive tried to pinpoint the issue by doing the following.

1) I thought the card was faulty at first, however I am not getting any of these issues when I put the 200GB micro SD card into a USB card reader and plug it in via USB.

2) I thought the Nifty Minidrive might be faulty, however the issues don't happen with my 64GB micro SD card.

3) Also the issues still happen when I put the 200GB Micro SD in a Standard SD adapter (actually tried 3 different adapters just to be sure) and put it in the card slot. The 64GB card works fine, but the 200GB card has issues still.

So the only conclusion I can come to is that there are issues with the Macbook Air 13 inch with high capacity cards...

The only question now, is it just my machine or all the built in SD Card readers? I dont know anyone else with one to check though...

Any suggestions, or insight?

I understand this 200GB capacity card is quite new, and I have not been able to find anyone else having issues online. Perhaps I am the first, or its just my machine/card reader that is faulty?

Thanks, Chris.

So I am at a point where I can confirm:

The 200GB SD Card works fine via USB hub/MiniSD Adapter. I can mount/unmount and copy to/from the card without any issues. The 200GB SD Card will mount using the internal SD card slot, but trying to copy to/from the card gives me the following error:

"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."

Using a smaller card gives me no issues at all.

Ive also updated to El Capitan 10.11.2 (15C50).

Anyone out there got any suggestions on what the issue might be? Could it be that the older (2012) macbook airs aren't made to support large (200+ GB) SD cards?

I'v now tested the SD Card on my Mid 2011 iMac at work and the 200gb card works fine in the SD card slot.

I'm not sure what the next step is. I cannot return the card if it isnt faulty, and if Macbook Airs don't support 200GB SD cards I am pretty much screwed here.

Thanks,

I am in your exact situation. I don't have any info to help, but wanted to get in the conversation if it amounts to anything.

Have you made any progress since December?

Thanks

Hey mate. Furtherest I got was asking nifty about it (they make the nifty minimise which is what I was planning to use the card with) they noted the Mid 2012 and lower mac book airs have just an SD card reader while the newer mac book airs have a SDXC card reader. They couldn't confirm for sure if this is why but they suspected it probably was the reason. No official word from apple or SanDisk though which is really poor.

I read in some other community posts that it was a contact issue. While their symptoms didn't match, I figured I'd give their solution a try. I used the included MicroSD to SD adapter. When inserting in the Macbook Air, I gave the notched corner a slight forward angle toward the screen. Instead of failing after transferring about 100-300mb with an error code -50, -30, or 0, I was able to transfer a 40gb iTunes library and a 75gb Photos library without any problems.

I'll reply back when I can test it in the Nifty. Hopefully it's just a matter of inserting it "properly" without defeating the purpose of a flush-mount adapter.

Really? I doubt it, as my lower capacity cards work fine, its just the 200GB card that has issues. And I've tried 4 different MicroSD to SD adapters, all of them work fine with lower capacity cards, but not with the 200GB card.

Sometimes I was able to transfer large amounts of data too and it seemd fine, but the card would fail if i ejected it and then re-inserted it using the internal card reader (sometimes it would work the first time and seem fine, but it always would fail eventually).

Either way let me know what your results are! Thanks for jumping in, now I know im not insane and other ppl are having issues.

With the minidrive, I get the same issues if it's fully inserted. But if I back it out about 1mm, I get full functionality. To keep it from shifting, I cut some paper to fit the length of the card and slid it in along with the card. Now it's wedged in snugly.

Far from ideal, but at least its still flush with the protective case on the computer. What I don't understand is why the 64gb card worked just fine, and the 200gb makes me jump through all these hoops. I'm vaguely familiar with the pinout of an sd card. Maybe the connection was bad all along, but a 64gb card didn't require the same active contacts as a 200gb card. Again, don't know. Just thinking out loud.

Just an update.

The card does unmount itself every couple days and requires a restart to remount. It's too bad we don't have any official help with this. But we are a niche market. And by definition, not a very profitable one. I'd be interested to know if anyone with newer macs have this problem.

Thanks again for the thread.

I've tried the card in the SD card slot on 2 newer macbook airs, 2 macbook pros and 2 IMac's at work, none of them experience any issues at all. This is the main thing that leads me to beleive it is to do with the older Macbook airs only having SD readers as apposed to SDXC readers.

Have you tried a service at the apple store.

You mean having my macbook air serviced? I haven't, but due to the nature of the issue (only having issues with high capacity cards and not all cards) I don't think it could be an issue which could be fixed by having it serviced, at this point i'm certain its a hardware limitation.

I thought nifty does not support any drive over 128. It is on their site.

It's not on their site, actually. It states that it supports whatever size the card is.

I'm running into this same exact issue too with my 2012 non retina MBP. It's very annoying =/

Same here ! cannot match with my Macbook Air 13 inch MID 2012 at all.

I can mount the 200GB SD card, but not working very well. Sometimes cannot create a folder, rename.... etc and occur an error.
