Unable to install El Capitan

I'm on 10.7.5 right now, and trying to upgrade to El Capital 10.11.6. It's the only version I can find for download. However, when I try to install it, it tells me I need 10.11 first. I can't find that anywhere. Any ideas?

I think you have downloaded the updater, not the full installer. The latter is around 5 or so GBs in size. Be sure that's what you downloaded.
