IMAC, Mid

My computer tells me I can no longer upgrade its OS- which is 10.8.5. This impacts my inability to update Safari and Firefox- which are now also security issues per my credit card companies. 

In addition, I would like to upgrade my Adobe products. I am currently running LR 4 and CS5.1. When I upgraded to OS 10.5, I no longer had access to Illustrator CS2, which I also need to update.

What is the starting point to get this menu of software back? Is it another computer? Or, can I update to Yosemite and does it give me access to newer Adobe software?

Currently I use a 20" screen. If I buy used, how old should that IMAC be to allow for ongoing expansion for a few years?

Considering the computer is 11 years old and will not run current versions of Mac OS it may be time to upgrade to a new machine. The current version of Mac OS can be run on the following Macs:

• MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
• MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
• MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
• Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
• iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
• Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

That being said, if you are going to buy a replacement Mac I strongly recommend against used computers as you have no history of that machine, no warranty and may simply be inheriting another's problems. Frequently these machine are not set up correctly when sold which creates even more problems. If you do want to buy used then look at Apple's refurbished section where  you can buy much more current machines, that are identical to a new one, have the Apple 1 year warranty, are eligible for AppleCare extended coverage and can save hundreds of dollars. In short, there is no down side. You can only buy them from Apple online store, you can find the link on Apple's home page (www.apple.com) at the bottom under Refurbished. If you don't find exactly what you are looking for then check often as inventory changes VERY quickly.
