Moving Library to External Hardrive Efficiently

So, basically, my current computer has a relatively low internal storage which is near to filling so to free up space I've decided to move all the music currently held in my iTunes library (Around 90 GB) over to my external hardrive..

My aim is to:

-Have all my downloaded music to date moved and stored to my external drive, and be able to access all of the music on here through iTunes any time the drive is connected.

-Store a smaller amount of music, comprising of future downloads on my laptop's internal hardrive, which should be accessible via iTunes at all times.

Basically, my query really is what is the most efficient method of doing this, as I know it is easy to make mess ups..?

My current idea is to carry out the following steps:

1) Drag all the music stored in my library out into the hardrive by selecting it all on iTunes and dragging it through file explorer... (My music is stored in a variety of folders across my laptop hardrive so I think this should be the simplest way).

2) Load a tune with the exclamation mark sign you get when you've moved the mp3 file and show the dialogue to the new folder in the external hardrive... Afterwards, I should hopefully be able to ask iTunes to search the new folder for all missing audio files, so I think this would solve the issue of the relocation of all the current music I have.

3) Make a smart playlist with the condition that the date added is after the day which I do this to keep the music on my laptop hardrive in one easily accessible place (effectively as a second library, whereby I can listen to the music in here when the external is not connected and use the main itunes library when it is).

Should this work fine?

I know that things become slightly complicated by me wanting some music on the external and some on the laptop, as well as that my music is currently scattered across various folders?
