Ringtone grayed out with "sync arrows" next to it

I made a fantastic ringtone that plays just fine on iTunes, under the tones section. I try to move it on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 and it just sits there on my phone, grayed out with the 2 circular sync arrows next to it, frozen. How do I fix this?

  • Connect the device
  • On the Tones tab uncheck Sync Tones
  • Sync the device
  • Check Sync Tones
  • Sync the device

How do You uncheck sync tones? I do not see this anywhere.! HELP

Here it is again...

  • Connect the device
  • On the Tones tab (select your device in iTunes) uncheck Sync Tones
  • Sync the device
  • Check Sync Tones
  • Sync the device

and when that doesn't work?

  1. Backup device.
  2. Restore as new device.
  3. Restore the backup made earlier.

This is the only thing that actually helped me. Leave yourself some time, as it takes a really long time if you've got a large number of photos and what not on your iPhone.

This worked for me.

Close you iphone if its already opened. Re open iTunes, go to View > Media Kind > Tones then drag your correct m4r file there, you will see your file in there, drag that file which you just dropped in itunes to the left corner and a window will pop with you iphone icon and name, drop the file there and it will automatically sync.

P.S in my iphone summery options, i have selected manually manage music and videos

Thanks so much for this advice iamthelegend27. I have been at this for an hour with all the extension changing and file conversions etc, your little bit of advice here finally did it! Never wanted an iPhone in the first place but so happy I can get my ringtones going on it since I have to use one for work
