Constant kernel panics after motherboard replac...
Hey guys,
I have a MacBook Pro Late 2013 and I recently had my motherboard replaced at a certified Apple service. After replacing it, everything was fine for about one week but then it started to shut down all of a sudden. No warning or anything. No kernel panic reports. Nothing. The screen turned black, the keyboard backlight remained on for a few seconds then it shut down. This happened during boot, at the login screen, while browsing, pretty much everywhere, several times a day. I sent it back and they said it could be a faulty motherboard so they replaced it again.
When I got it back I started getting kernel panics (with reports) -- 10+ per day, at the login screen, while working, browsing, everywhere (apparently) at random. I tried reinstalling the OS several times, PRAM SMC does nothing.
To exclude a hardware fault I installed Windows 10 on it. Wiped everything clean, formatted the SSD as NTFS and it worked perfectly fine -- 4+ days no issues. I installed MacOS back on it and it's acting up again.
I looked through the kernel panic reports and there's nothing consistent except for the panic type. It's either 13 or 14 general protection, registers / page fault, registers. I made an archive with everything I have in System Reports: Dropbox - Archive.zip -- you can look at the reports maybe you'll see something I don't.
A few things of note:
- Most of these kernel panics happened while the laptop was not connect to anything except the charger and a magic mouse
- My current charger is the 65W model not the 85W. I lost the original about 2 months ago and didn't buying a new one yet.
- After being shutdown overnight I was able to write this message from the MacBook in question without any kernel panics.
- After one kernel panic more seem to follow in a short time to the point I can't even log in after it restarts. A prolonged shut down seems to help.
- I monitored the temperature a for quite a few days it does not overheat
- My original motherboard had the 2.0GHZ I7 processor and 8GB of RAM the new one has the 2.2GHZ I7 and 16GB of RAM
- 8 months ago I had my wireless module replaced
Let me know if you have any ideas or solutions.
The page fault related KP's can be related to malfunctioning RAM. Did you exchange the RAM modules at some point?
Otherwise the most probable cause is in the installed software on the Mac's side. Can you post an Etrecheck report? https://etrecheck.com/
It's very improbable that 2 separate motherboards have faulty RAM. Though not impossible. Still, if that's the case the problem should have persisted on Windows.
Here is the reports you asked for:
