Imac start up problem

Hi. My dad and i have had the late 2012 iMac and about a year ago, I started experiencing problems, maybe due to the fact that I was playing video games on it. However, after i deleted the potential problem, (the video game itself), and upgraded to OS X Sierra, it is even slower than it used to be. The start up time is longer and the overall Mac is very slow. To top it off, recently, my iMac starts up with the sound, apple logo and the progress bar but when the progress bar is full, the screen just remains like that. It does not take me into user screen or anything else. It's almost as if its frozen. What should i do?
