Why are SMS messages stuck as unread on Watch?

Since upgrading to watchOS 4, I've noticed that SMS messages (non-iMessage) are left unread on my Watch (Series 2) even once I've read them on my iPhone or Mac. This is not happening with iMessages.

I think this may be due to the fact that Messages doesn't stay actively running in the background, but I can't prove it. I think this because going in to the messages app on my Watch to mark them as read takes a while to load up where it used to be much faster on watchOS 3.
