Could my iMac be the cause of shorts in my keyb...

I don't like Apple's keyboard. In fact, I don't like membrane keyboards at all. For some time I have switched back to good old (and rather expensive) mechanical keyboards, and I have had a mechanical keyboard connected to my iMac through USB ever since I bought the iMac (and it was connected to its predecessor as well).

A week ago, the keyboard started behaving strangely. The LEDs were changing color and intensity, and bad characters were being sent occasionally. I took the keyboard and connected it to my Linux PC, and as the problem persisted, I thought that it was just the keyboard that reached its end of life.

So I went and brought another one that I had in my office (buying a new one for the office), and connected it to my iMac. All was fine and dandy for a few days, but yesterday, this other keyboard also freaked - no problem with the LEDs, but it just kept sending strings of characters.

At this point, I have to rule in the possibility that there is a hardware issue with my USB. But there are other devices connected through USB and they are not showing errors or malfunction. Is there a way to check this without actually taking the computer over to the lab? (The local authorized entity here is not Apple).

You should try to reset the SMC as a first course of action.  Follow the instructions here.
