The wifi network requires a wpa2 password error

HI, I recently had an issue with my Airport time capsule. i can detect the wifi network but it keeps prompting me for the following..'Thd Wi-Fi network requires a WPA2 password'

i used the Airport Utiliy and confirms the WPA2 password and setting.

but when I select the network, it keeps prompting the error message.

it was working all the while.

any suggestion?

What model is your TC?

Reset it to factory.. no files are lost and do the following.

Are you actually running Lion as per your profile?

Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

 

Setup the TC again.

 

Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

 

 

If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. 

 

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

 

3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.

 

4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.

 

5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.

 

In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,

Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).

 

You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.

However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.

 

6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.

 

 

 

 

There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

Give us some more info about the whole network and some screenshots of the setup if the issue is ongoing.

It is well worth it in the computer.. clear out all the known wireless.. reboot the computer and rediscover the wireless.. this may fix the issue alone..

i'm running OS X EI Capitan. But I'm having issue with ios devices (9.3.1) as well.

Changed the name to no space and alphanumerics already.

Done with the password As well.

same issues. It keeps saying my password is invalid/incorrect

note that if I disable security, I can connect to the wifi....

From the screenshot the base station name still has apostrophe..

As well as being over long.

Notice the name on the second Time Capsule was identical to the first and hence the (2) after the name.. this is going to cause confusion..

I would fix up both base stations names.. short means <10 characters not 25.

You start running into trouble with names over 25.. but let me recommend keep them short as well.

TCgen5 is nice.. and TCgen4.

Your wireless name is better.. but I don't like the mixed caps.. I know I am being pedantic.. believe it or not I have a few posts around here where it caused issues.

Can you try with keithwifi for a bit. Humour me.

I would also use WPA2 security.. it is better optimised and in fact is necessary for AC wireless.

Is your TC from US? Are you located in the US?

Did you clear out all the accumulated wireless names? Laptops end up full of them as do ipads.. clear all the existing names.

Is there another wireless in your area that doesn't have password protection.. that can lead to some strange results.

Run the wireless diagnostics on the laptop and see what it comes up with.

Did you upgrade install El Capitan.. that can have issues.. although I am not sure that can explain the ipad..

Disconnect the TC from the internet.. make the changes..

One of those strange things that happen now is people change passwords and they change straight back due to the icloud connection causing passwords to be copied between your items..

Make sure all your stuff is changed and working locally.. then plug the WAN back into the modem.

TC is from Singapore and I'm based in Singapore.

Yes, cleared out the accumulated wireless name.

Nope, all the wireless are password protected.

EI Capitan is an upgrade.

interestingly my 2 TC setting are the same. One is working but the other keep saying password invalid.

THANK YOU!  I had a similar problem.  I have an Arris DSL modem which has the radio turned off, but is functioning as the router and issues the DHCP numbers.  My TimeCapsule is set as a Bridge and is the WiFi hub. I have two Airport Express extending the wireless network.  Key items I believe were impactful was taking the TC back to factory defaults, the setting of the "WPA2 Personal" setting for security as well as the configuration of the IPv6 to "Link-Local Only".  I also whittled down the unit names to make them a bit easier.   The only thing I was not able to do was to follow your instruction, "It is well worth it in the computer.. clear out all the known wireless.. reboot the computer and rediscover the wireless.. this may fix the issue alone."  I have more than 5+ years of wifi sites that I know are in my settings, but I couldn't locate where to edit them out.  In any event, I now have a functioning LAN!  Thanks again.
