Airdrop not working between iMac mid 2011 and M...

Hi everyone,

This week I bought a MBA 2013 for my girfriend and myself, they see eachother when attempting to use Airdrop, flawlessly transfering files. I have an iMac from mid 2011 which will not see either MacBook AIr over Airdrop. It is quite annoying to say the least. I have read around the posts here and there seems to be little to no support for this problem, which seems to afflict quite a few people.

They are all on the same network, all have file sharing enabled in system pref. and all of them clearly support Airdrop. I have deleted and re entered my Apple ID info to no avail.

Does anyone have an answer to this problem? It seems like there are enough people to warrant intervention on Apple's part.

Looking forward to any and all replies, cheers Pluckaduck

On your mid-2011 iMac, open Finder and do Go > AirDrop from Finder's menu.

Does that solve your issue?

If not, does the AirDrop choice appear under "Go"?

By the way, in case you don't know this, in order for one computer to see another in AirDrop, they must both be in their AirDrop windows at the same time.

Hello sberman,

Thank you for your reply, I of course go to the finder and select Airdrop from there, as for your second comment, yes if I go to Go in the menu bar Airdrop appears in the drop down menu. So thank you for stating the obvious, unfortunately this in no way helps me with my problem. I understand sometimes the simplest thing can be the cause, but in this case I have checked most of the offered remedies mentioned in these forums. With the exception of the terminal hack, because, I believe that is for unsupported Mac's.

My problem is connectivity, Airdrop on my iMac does not see either MBA and vice versa. I have had all three computers with their respective Airdrop windows open simultaneously, as I stated previously, the two Airs see each other instantly. They do not see the iMac and the iMac does not see them.

I hope somebody has a solution to this annoying problem.

Regards, Plucka

No one has an answer here? I hope that somebody has an enlightening opinion or suggestion to solve this issue.

Cheers, Plucka

try doing an SMC reset on the iMac that's not being seen in the airdrop. then try it again

also the fact that you have 3 computers 2 can see each other no problem but neither can see the imac and the imac can't see them indicates an issue w/ the wireless network the imac is connected to.

i would turn wifi off and open network prefs on the imac, remove all the preferred networks then close out those preferences

then turn on the wifi and reselect the wireless network and then try again to use the airdrop.

if it still doesn't work there is definately something blocking the ability on the imac since the other 2 work w/ no problem.

I am having almost the exact same problem. I have done an SMC reset. I have a 21.5" mid-2011 imac, two macbook airs from mid-2012 and two iphone 5c's. All have either Yosemite or iOS8. My 2 iphones and 2 macbook airs all see each other through airdrop but none of them can see the imac through airdrop. Also the imac cannot see the macbook airs or the iphones through airdrop. They are all connected to the same wifi network.

By the way, my macbook airs and imac were able to airdrop between each other before yosemite.

Has anyone found a solution?

This article explains:

Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support

From one of the Macs looking for the iMac, start AirDrop in Finder and get to the following display:

Presumably you do not see the iMac, so click the "Don't see who you're looking for" link.  That will display this:

Press "Search for an Older Mac" and you'll be set!

worked perfectly! Thank you so much. I didn't have to do that before Yosemite so I just thought it would work automatically.

Glad that helped!

Apple apparently changed how the Macs communicate using AirDrop with Yosemite compared to previous OS X versions.  I don't recall ever needing Bluetooth in previous versions.  Also with Yosemite, the Macs don't even need to be on the same WiFi network any longer.

I have two older iMacs bought in late 2009. Both run Yosemite.

However, neither of them 'see' each other on AirDrop since the upgrade to 10.10.

Did Yosemite drop support of AirDrop between two 2009 era iMacs? I understand the "search for old" between an old iMac and a new laptop. That works OK. But I can't get the two old machines to see each other with AirDrop

One other thing. One of the old machines can't see the new laptop. So maybe AD is simply not working on that hardware? What might be blocking it?

It worked fine between them under Mav.

Any ideas?

Having the same issue with Imac mid 2011 - it was working fine in mavericks and on Yosemite and on el capitan doesn't work.

Jan 2017 - Sierra iMac and Yosemite iMac on different local wifi networks do not see each other, with Contacts Only or Everyone. Bummer. Going back to email attachment to share document.

I don't even have those blue hyperlinks in my iMac 2011 airdrop.  how do I fix?Screen Shot 2017-02-23 at 8.42.50 pm.png

Same issue, no hyperlinks, no message telling me that I have to turn on bluetooth.
