2017 iMac freezing when transferring data from ...

I recently got a new 2017 iMac. I backed up the MacBook Pro to an external hard drive then used migration assistant to transfer files from the hard drive to the iMac. When I got to the window where the iMac finds the external hard drive iMac recognized it. I chose the external hard drive, but the continue button did not allow me to go further than that page.

I quite the transfer and went out and got a USB transfer cable and plugged both computers in, opened up migration assistant. This time the transfer started up. After transferring about 1/3 of the files the operations froze. The iMac got only the desk top files from the MacBook Pro (I checked).

I also don't understand why the transfer files were restored to another log in. Why aren't they merging to the one login?

This is so confusing. I am not tech savvy and need help.
