MacBook Airdrop on VPN

Hello, I've tried several VPN's and have had various issues with one or the other and have finally settled on ExpressVPN for its speed mainly, but I've also had far fewer technical issues while using it. I've had VPN's that make Siri unusable, restricted website access, etc.... The only issue i've been having with Express is I cannot figure out a way to get Airdrop to my iPhone 7 Plus to work while I'm connected... I've tried listing different apps and preferences that are excluded from the VPN settings, like Siri and Systems Preferences, for example... But to no avail.

I've been told by one person I can't use Airdrop while on VPN as my MacBook is on a different server than my iPhone which is connected to the same WiFi but not VPN; however, I have not been able to confirm that and I'm a bit confused on the issue - I actually just ran across a question on these forums in which the user complained they could only get Airdrop to work while using VPN, the complete opposite problem i'm having.

So, which is it? Does using VPN require sacrificing the Airdrop feature? Is this an issue on other VPN networks? Are there any workarounds?
