All personal folders intact, but all files lost...

this is quite weird to me. i'm an experienced user but i have no clue what happened to the system.

Symptom:

  • sorry, i didnt have a time machine backup otherwise i'm already saved. and you should know how much i regret...
  • folders under my account are intact, every folder looks the same as usual
  • everything under the folders are just gone, no matter how deep they are
  • .DS_Store looks like not affected. can't verify the content. at least they're there and not zero byte.
  • appears to happen in a very short time. i have lots of files
  • appears to happen after a midnight El Capitan beta upgrade
  • /.fseventsd/ and other root folders were not affected
  • /Users/xxxx/Library looks good, still have files there but obviously not what i wanted/lost.
  • my local genius bar cant do anything about this

What I already did to remedy/find clues:

  • in storage information, my files do look gone. plenty empty space right now.
  • did fsck/disk first aid several times, no file system corruption at all.
  • checked file system permission, no issue, i even logged in as SU.
  • attempted to recovery files with many different data recovery tools (only did the scan not the actual recovery). Can't find a single recently deleted file.
  • rebuilding the user account doesn't do the trick (actually just the same as the permission problem)
  • nothing weird under system log. except SyncServices complained 'admin.db corrupted looks like disk full but disk has plenty of space' blahblah

I got the idea that /.fseventsd/ keeps the file system access logs there.

So I am counting on find a tool to analyze them to see what really happened to the system.

The worst possible case is I'm hacked.

The most likely case is there's something wrong with the latest system upgrade process.

Either way, I don't know why my folders are still there.

So please, anyone, help me. Thanks.

This has happened to me very recently too..  Did you manage to recover? :(

Having the same issue. Tried resetting finder, creating a new user, disk utility and so on. Nothing worked.

This happened to me this week, at least I realized it a few days ago. Like you guys, under DOCUMENTS: all folders intact, but all show the same date Sept. 6, ALL FILES MISSING.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk  Macintosh HD

Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB  Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Latest development yesterday: reboots spontaneously while lid closed with or without sleep function

Tech Support via Chat couldn't help, they were really nice and extremely patient with me and I appreciate that!

Sucking it up and going to make an appointment at the Apple Store - maybe an overhaul or tuneup or whatever magic they perform can find the missing files.  I say "missing" because supposedly nothing is really gone unless it's written over? hopehopehope

Yes, backup, blah blah blah (not for several weeks, I know) BUT I want to know HOW or WHY this happened and will it happen again, how to prevent it, etc.
