Airpod battery meter no longer shows in WatchOS 4?

This article states you should be able to see your Airpod's battery level on your Apple Watch by swiping up the control center and clicking on the watch's percent meter. I've tried this with WatchOS 4 and the only battery meter shown is the Watch itself. No additional meters are shown here. Yes, the Airpods are connected to the watch as I can see them from the bluetooth area. In fact, I'm listening to music from the Watch.

Is this a bug in WatchOS 4 or is there some way to solve this issue? Any ideas why WatchOS 4 isn't showing the battery levels of the Airpods?

Interestingly, when I put the Airpods into the case and open the case up, the control center screen touching on percent meter shows the Airpod case battery level. However, it does not show either or both Airpod battery levels in or out of the case.
