Preventing automatic emoji

How can I prevent text such as ";-)" from automatically being converted to a emoji character?

27" iMac, 13" MacBook Air, both 2011, both Sierra.

where is this happening? In all text fields? Only in given apps? Given websites?

It happens in Mail, maybe others.

That's weird because I'm on Sierra as well and Mail doesn't replace ;-) by an Emoji

Do you have any text replacing rules that could do this? (System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text)

No substitutions.

Bingo. It must just have been happening in Messages. Thanks for the help.
