Apple Mail stuck after large import of email

After recovering 15,000 deleted emails.  I'm trying to import them to Apple Mail.  I did the import in multiple batches because the number was so big.

Now my Mail program hangs every time I try to open it.

I think the issue may be that each imported message has it's own folder in the "Import" folder.  That's 15,000 sub-folders.

Two questions:

1.  How can I get Mail to start working again. 

2.  The import was successful, when Mail was working I could see and read each of the imported messages.  However, I'd rather they not be in 15,000 subfolders (hard to work with.)  How can I import to one folder?
