In need of some MacBook Pro upgrade advice

I currently have a late 2013 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5 with Retina. It has only 128 GB of storage, which is proving to not be enough--I have only ~3-5 GB of storage remaining, so needing something more is pretty imminent. The options I have in terms of upgrading are...

(1) a $600 upgrade to 500 GB SSD, through a local store

(2) purchasing a new 256 GB MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i5

(3) purchasing a refurbished (through Apple) 512 GB MacBook Pro 2.9GHz i5

(4) trading computers with my mom--she has a 2014 MacBook Pro 256 GB (not sure of processor)

I use my computer mostly for school, and ended up in an engineering major, which is mainly why I didn't purchase more storage when I first bought my computer. I am not a huge fan of the new port/dongle situation (is anyone?), which is why I am hesitant to upgrade to a new/refurbished MacBook Pro, but it almost seems more reasonable to do that. Any tips/advice/anything?! TIA!

If you really need storage I'd recommend: USB-C M.2 Drive Enclosure - USB 3.1 (10Gbps) | Drive Enclosures | StarTech.com + Some NVMe SSD. The speeds are pretty much equivalent.

Be careful with the SSD thing, some people are having trouble updating to high Sierra with a non apple SSD
