TRRS Mic not recognized by MBP Late 2013

I recently purchased a RODE smartLav+ mic. It has a TRRS jack and works fine for recording audio on my iPhone 5S.

However, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), it doesn't seem to switch over to the mic. It mutes the audio, thinking the mic's a headphone, but it doesn't list additional devices besides the internal mic.

I've searched for similar issues, but everyone appears to be having the opposite issue: putting non-TRRS jacks into the MBP's TRRS headset port.

Any help? Not sure what to do. Already tried to see if I can find it in Audio MIDI Settings, but don't see it listed as an audio-in option there either.

Hi,

That's because there is no mic jack on your MBP; it's only a headphone jack. In order to input audio, you'll need to use the built in mics or something with a USB connection, like the Griffin iMic: https://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-iMic-original-Adapter/dp/B003Y5D776

That's not the case, the jack is a TRRS jack which is an input AND output jack as is clearly shown by the fact that you can plug in an Apple headphone with mic and use it to converse online.

The issue is that some TRRS mics aren't being recognised as such by OSX, so we need to know how to move past that. Any fresh ideas?
