hard drive speeds up

When I'm on my Mini and playing multiple games online at one site. All of a sudden you can hear the hard drive speed up. When this happens everything slows to a crawl with the cursor changing back and forth from an arrow to a spinning rainbow circle. Is this a sign my hard drive is going or is it because the RAM is no large enough. I have 4 gig of ram installed. Things will be fine for days and then it starts. Also. When this happens. I will restart my Mini and sometimes the log in image on my desktop is the Apples Sierra Mt.s image and sometimes it's the picture of my dog. Which is what I picked. Any suggestions?
