iMac as Expanded Screen with MacBook

I would like to use my iMac (late 2009) as an expanded screen for my MacBook Pro. Once connected, I would like to use the keyboard and mouse connected to the iMac to control/type on the MacBook Pro documents/applications. What is the best way to setup that connection? Is it better to use a dock as opposed to a MiniDisplay to Thunderbolt cable? I want to avoid having to unplug the keyboard from the iMac and into the MacBook Pro and back and forth, as I sometimes use the iMac on its own. I appreciate any and all advice/input.

check out > Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

Target Display Mode will only work if you have a 27" 2009 iMac and a MacBook that has MiniDisplay Port or Thunderbolt.

If either fail to meet the requirement, then you could use a VNC like > Remote Desktop, > ScreenRecycler or > macOS Screen Sharing
