HELP! No reason for my slow MBP

I have a mid-2012 MacBookPro:

- 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

- 2.9 GHz Intel core i7

- 256 GB hard drive of which there is 193 GB available.

- Running El Capitain 10.11.6

Nothing I do fixes how slow every single aspect of this computer currently is. Every thing I hover the mouse over gets me a spinning beach ball for a few seconds. Every activity of any kind gets me a spinning beachball for a few seconds. Garageband won't play without hanging up. iMovie won't let me edit anything without hanging up and taking hours to load. What I'm typing RIGHT NOW keeps hanging.

If I select "Shut Down" from the menu it gets hung up on the blue screen, and I have to power down manually. But I've checked the system activity and there are no additional programs hanging anywhere to cause that. System activity reports no pressure on the memory and usually 80-90% of the CPU idle.

I've run First Aid. I've rebooted in Safe Mode. I've reset the PRAM and SMC.

I've run Disk Repair to fix a corrupted hard drive and got a message that everything had been fixed and never got that report again from First Aid.

I've consulted every resource I can find throughout the interwebs and no one can help me. There doesn't seem to be any reason I need to go buy a new MBP when the specs on this one should still be good... but it's just a sick computer and can't get any better.
