icloud used to free up space on HDD

Hello, I have Macbook Pro with 512gb storage. I bought 1TB icloud drive with sole purpose of uploading RAW photos from my camera there. I do not want these files to take up space from my hard drive. How can I do it?

For what you want to do, you need a different cloud based solution such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Flicker.

Can not answer unless you provide details

for example you can use Photos with iCloud Photo library and set your Mac to have optimized photos which will automatically reduce the size of your Photos library as needed

There are other ways too but first you have to tell use how your operate and what you expect - there is no way to have the RAW images only on iCloud and use them on the Mac

Hi Larry,
as I wrote in my post I am using iCloud to store RAW photos from my camera. I simply drag and drop these files to folders that I created in icloud drive. Here's a screenshot of my iCloud Drive.

The whole reason why I bought iCloud Drive was to store the original photos ONLY on iCloud Drive and NOT on my computer, because I will only need them sporadically and I want to have them safely stored on apple servers.
I read some discussions on internet and it seems though that the files are also still stored in some hidden space on my laptop and thus use up my hard drive space.

Hi Eric,

thanks for your response.

So bottom line  iCloud drive will always keep any files (not just photos) also on my hard drive.

You are welcome.  Yes. The only exception is if you are running Sierra or higher and go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options to turn on Documents and Desktop syncing with Optimization turned on. Then files in those two locations will be stored in iCloud (no local copy) as required to make space on the computer.

Yes, I saw the Desktop&Documents icloud storage possibility, but I find this option very confusing and clumsy. I will cancel icloud subscription and buy it on dropbox for same price.
