Apple Hardware Test detected an error:

I have had my MacBook Pro (16Gb memory and 500Gb flash drive) for over 3 years now and I have never had any issues with it. In fact, its still preforming as good as it did when I first purchased it.

But recently I was watching something on YouTube and seen how to preform the Apple Hardware Test (turning on while holding "D"). I did this and got the following error code:

4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)

After Googling this code I read that I have an issue with my memory and should take to the Apple Store to have it fixed. (obviously I'm out of the warranty). As there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the computers performance, what are you thoughts on this situation? All advice is much appreciated.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

This is a Hard drive error. Could be the drive, cable connection or SATA cable itself.

In your case  rMBP,   SSD drive, drive socket or pin connection

Why did you run the test if you were having no problems? I see now from above—idle curiosity.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test

Always good to have a up to date backup plan. How to create a boot clone

It's a internal SSD trouble, not memory. You'd better back up data as soon as possible if it's possible and replace internal SSD.

Is the error code found in apple article ( not found )  : Apple Diagnostics: Reference codes - Apple Support

Not relevant appreciate,

your link is Apple Diagnostic ref. for machines after 2013. A quick search for HDD in your ref. you could have seen this for yourself or maybe you don't care—just what is your goal here?

As clearly stated by the OP this is Apple Hardware Test (AHT)

4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)

If this was a RAM issue, the error code would have included something like:

4MEM......

4HDD is definitely the hard drive or SSD. As mentioned, make a backup now and check your SSD warranty (my OWC SSD had a 3-year warranty).

The Apple Hardware Test does NOT actually test that HDD as such.  It tests for the connection to the HDD though a faulty HDD may generate that error.  More than likely the SATA cable is faulty or the circuitry on the logic board.

Your best course of action is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.

Ciao.

I see now that this is fairly old, but I'll add data for future readers.

I don't have all the info - Apple apparently does not provide detailed info on how the test is run and how to interpret it (why?, oh nevermind).  But i can add the following info, which may counter advice made below:

1. It is not necessarily a bad SSD. It can be the SSD, a bad connection, a bad cable, or a bad controller on the motherboard. My SSD, for example, is fine once i put it in another machine or enclosure.

2. Apple has noted (in a bulletin that I don't have handy)  that this **can** (not "is") a false positive:  with SSDs that are tested in a loop, you may receive this in error. If your machine works fine but you see an error, it might be false.

3. There were a large number of marginal and defective cables shipped from 2009-2012 in MBP machines.  I had one already (I am presuming this is #2) and my local firendly service center said "oh, that cable, we see it all the time". So at $11 on ebay, its my first try.

In the end trouble isolate what you can. The drive is easiest since USB SATA enclosures are easily found for $25, and worth having.
