Find my iphone disabled on stolen phone by thief
Hi. I got a story for you that happened this week. I have been in touch with Apple but so far we have no clue how this was done.
Some information:
Phone was turned off when it was stolen(low battery)
I have a 6 digit pin.
Semi-Strong password, changed regularly
2 factor protection
I always use Latest IOS
When the phone was stolen I noticed it quite early, so I called my carrier and asked them to block the sim card just a few hours after.
I put the phone in lost mode, added a message to call me if it was found, I also pressed the play alert sound button.
I monitored icloud/find my iphone on a daily basis, 2 days ago the stolen phone was turned on for a few minutes and then turned off again.
now to the very strange part.
yesterday night I recieved 4 emails after each other from icloud:(translated to eng..)
- Lost mode activated
- a sound alert has been played on your Iphone.
- Iphone has been found.
- Lost mode has been deactivated on your iphone
The 4th email was sent just 2 min after the 3 first messages.
I logged into my icloud and now this phone is gone.
it is no longer in my account.
How was this possible? even if my icloud password was hacked I have 2 factor authentication and as far as I know you cannot remove a device from your account without using 2FA or SMS.
The only way Lost Mode could've been deactivated is if the thief knew your passcode to your device -- iCloud: Lock and track your device using Lost Mode. You mentioned you had a 6-digit passcode. Do you know if the individual who stole your phone could've guessed what the passcode was? Perhaps they knew your date of birth or was randomly entering digits being careful of the lockout period? Who knows.
even with the pin code, the device was disabled. I had it on lost mode with a message.
but lets assume that pin code was guessed correctly. they still need a quite complex icloud password, not the mention the 2 factor authentication, which can only be done(AFAIK) on another Apple device I own, or via SMS.
The Sim card was disabled very shortly after the theft, so we can rule out SMS.
The only other device I have is the old iphone I currently use.
There must be some new hack that they have used.
Some other news on the issue: The even managed to remove the phone from the IMEI blacklist.
it was there yesterday, today it was removed. I checked the list every day since it was stolen.
I have been in touch with both Apple and my mobile carrier.
Apple has escalated the issue to senior engineers.
My provider could clearly see that the device was blacklisted monday-tuesday but somehow it got "cleaned" and removed from list today.
I am fairly certain that the phone was stolen during a quick visit to a crowded 7-11, I did not see anyone I knew, I think we can assume that it was a random pick pocket thief.
Lets hope Apple can find something.

I'm not sure what Apple can do in this situation. Most times, the device will be sold for parts or to an unsuspecting individual who will not bother verifying if there's an Activation Lock in place or not. Rarely will you find an instance where the device will be turned on for either a brief or extended period of time.
your not really answering the issue..but I agree, most often they are probably sold as parts.
but in this case the device was removed from icloud, removed from imei backlist, added to another persons icloud account and is now in use.
all of which apple + my cell provider says are impossible without my password. but no one can explain how they got around the 2 factor authentication.
below is not apple related but here are the data from IMEI check in cronological order
IMEI check from monday
IMEI: 352068xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Brand: Apple Apple IMEI checker is available
Phone model: iPhone 6
Find my iPhone: ON
iCLoud status*: LOST/STOLEN
Blacklist status**: BLACKLISTED
early morning:
IMEI: 352068xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Brand: Apple Apple IMEI checker is available
Phone model: iPhone 6
Find my iPhone: OFF
iCLoud status*: CLEAN
Blacklist status**: CLEAN
And later today it was Find my iphone = ON, so it is now tied to another person.
