upgrade MacBook Pro (13

Current Spec:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

Purpose -  Making it to perform faster
Want to use for running Big data analytics (learning) etc..

Looking to upgrade RAM and memory to
- 16 GB RAM,  512 GB SSD - Does this improve the performance drastically?

Adding RAM does not improve performance. It enables the computer to load and process more data without forcing it to use virtual or disk-based memory. If you want to improve multi-tasking then you add more RAM. RAM is the same as memory. It is not the same as storage or disk capacity. A 500GB SSD is surely large enough for almost all uses, but if you need more, then add an external drive.

As for buying a new computer I would wait for the next generation of Macs unless you are desperate.

Hi,

The upgrades will allow you have more windows/apps open at once, and may help out the OS if RAM is needed, and the SSD will definitely speed up any read/writes to the drive, but nothing can make up for the lack of processing power a new MBP would have compared to your existing one. To get the most power, you'd want to get a new 15" model, although the 13" models would still be considerably faster than yours.
