I cannot copy files to itunes since updating

Since updating to the latest itunes version I cant copy files to itunes from my windows laptop.   If I try to drag and drop I just get the little 'link' icon but no file is copied.  The drop down menu doesn't work either.  In my file list on the laptop there is a little itunes icon next to the file names which didn't used to be there!  The community has always come up with an answer before and I really appreciate your help.  Sylvia
