how can I delete photos off of my iPhone after ...

I have downloaded my pictures from my iPhone to iCloud using my macair.  Now I need to delete some (not all) of the pictures from my iPhone but if I do it will delete them from the iCloud correct? That is what it says when I hit "delete photo". It says "The photo will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library on all of your devices. I want to delete the off my iPhone so I don't have so many photos on there, but I do not want them deleted from iCloud photo library.
