I changed my mail password in the mail preferen...

I have an iMac and an running macOS Sierra, version 10.12.6, processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, memory 8 GB 1333MHz DDR3.

I was hacked and needed to change passwords. The first was my Apple ID password. Then I changed my mac.com email password in the mail preferences, accounts, server settings. Now, I cannot use the primary email account and get this message:

Could not connect to this IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SDL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.

I followed these instructions and still cannot access my primary email account. My gmail account still works.
