Help!  Songs on iPhone but not in iTunes

Using an external hard drive to store my music which consists of purchased music from Apple and uploaded (CD) music from my collection. I was tinkering with the external hard drive and lost 3/4 of my music and cannot get it back. I DO have all of the songs on my iPhone (purchased music from Apple and my uploaded music).  I don't want to sync my phone with iTunes since it will remove the music from my iPhone.  Is there a way to the music OFF the iPhone and either into iTunes or my hard drive?  I have contacted Apple with no solution.
