Does your MacBook Pro Retina speakers buzz?
I have the new MacBook Pro Retina, which I absolutely love. The only issue so far is that the speakers buzz sometimes. I've tried different equalizer settings, which helps somewhat. Has anyone else experienced a buzzing or distortion in their audio output? It almost sounds as though a speaker is blown.
Yeah, i have that same issue
Please let us know, what you find out - I'm gonna call Apple tomorrow and hear what can be done.
Is it certain clips or songs that is distorted or the system itself? The bootsound is a bit distorted on mine. But I just figured that it might be the quality of that soundclip...
Since I posted this message, I can't for the life of me reproduce the buzzing now! I've tried maximizing the system volume, iTunes volume, then tried playing different tracks using different equalizers, and no buzzing.

Actually, I just determined that the buzzing only occurs with home videos, either .mov or .m4v. The buzzing occurs playing the movies with either QuickTime or or MPlayer. I haven't tried any other players. I also tried playing a couple of commercial movies downloaded to iTunes, and they played without any buzzing.
Even when I tuned the volume down, some buzzing still occurred with the home movies.
Then I'm happy to say that your recordings are causing the buzzing. The videos you're watching have probably sound problems. If it's the settings of the recordings or the actual microphone on the camera is hard for me to determine, so I wish you a happy hunting but it's not your Mac.
This is what I think the problem with the MB Pro Retina speakers is...
Frequency Response is very good. The speakers sound great with distinct sounds across a wide range of frequencies. But it sounds horrible with low quality TV or movie recordings where a lot of mid range and low frequency sounds hit at the same time in a muddled mess. Volume Handling is simply horrible across the mid and lower frequencies. Many movies will buzz when there is a lot of speech, music and bass going on at the same time unless you lower the volume to 1~2 bars.
This is not a problem with the recording except that the MBP Retina speakers don't like them. Recordings and low quality compression DOES NOT BUZZ, period. They may be low definition, they may sound muddled, they may have cut offs from exceeding the allowed dyanmic range, but they do not buzz. If you play the same movie on external speakers they will not buzz. If I play the same movie on my Dell Adamo it does not buzz. Listening to the same section of the same source on my earphones produce zero buzzing.
I am not sure if the problem is with the speakers themselves of other elements within the MBP Retina vibrating in resonance. But it is definitely annoying. And it sounds like component speakers with improper or missing crossover components allowing frequencies the speakers cannot handle at decent volumes to contaminate the driver or attempting to use mid-bass speakers as sub-woofers -- they actually have the frequency response just grossly insufficient travel of the diaphrams and cannot handle any decent volume.
We may be able to figure out the problematic frequencies and do a narrow cut in volume on them if we have a graphic equalizer. Unfortunately, unlike Realtek and IDT drivers, the Cirrus Logic drivers do not offer an EQ. I am tempted to open the MBP Retina up and try to graft an adhoc crossover onto the four speakers in form of caps and inductors. Given the low wattage of the components the caps and inds will be pretty small. But haven't gotten around to it yet... and part of me don't want to rip the MBP apart.
I too am experiencing speaker buzz. It occurs in iTunes, and does not seem affected by the bit rate of the songs, i tried listening to 320 kbps songs and the amount of buzz was the same as 160 kbps songs. It is most noticeable in classical songs, due to the long, swelling sounds, and the lower number of trebles than most rock songs.
I haven't had any problems, but haven't really used them a lot. I have listened to several internet videos of varying quality, but not a lot of music.
Has anyone had any luck with Apple support on this? I don't have time during normal Apple support hours during the week to call, so I won't get to it until Saturday. Just got the computer two days ago, and I'm hearing crackling and popping during most playbacks. It's faint, but it's definitely there.
I think I've isolated the frequency as the bass riff in Unobstructed Views, by Death Cab For Cutie. It has a distinctive rythm that is matched by the buzzing of the speakers. Listen at 1:50 and its very easily discernible. I don't know what frequency this is, but it definately causes buzzing. I plan on phoning Apple Support today, and I'll report back.
I received my replacement yesterday, and the buzzing is gone!
Is your computer buzzing on the song that stu_douglas mentioned? Mine are buzzing like the buzziest bee of them all!
