Using UK Apple Watch Series 3 in Europe

So I received my series 3 Apple Watch with LTE on launch day and enjoyed going out without my phone in the UK. I've come to Spain for the weekend and was disappointed to learn that as soon as I leave the hotel, the Apple Watch LTE will not connect to the local cellular network even though the associated iPhone Sim is connected to said network and works happily.

It can't be a cellular band limitation as this watch model supports European countries, (not the US but I don't mind that so much.)

 

 

So the question is this:

 

Who is holding back being able to use a UK Watch Series 3 with Cellular in Europe, Apple or EE (the current UK exclusive service provider)?

 

 

The main time I would like to benefit from the 'Freedom Calls' selling point of the watch + LTE is while in Europe, being able to go around with no phone in my pocket but I can't. I would even purchase a local (e.g. French SIM) for my iPhone, and set up a watch plan for a month with this local SIM and forward calls from my UK phone to this 'temporary' Sim, to get this feature while away but don't know if that's even possible

 

Can we expect to be able to use our UK / European Apple Watches outside of our home country at any point soon? In the next 6 months potentially? Currently, when I don't have my phone with me, my Series 3 has no more connected abilities than my 3 year old 'series 0' model
