how to update OS X on MacBook

Hello,

I can't seem to buy an app that requires "compatibility: OS X 10.11 or later".

Information I found about my MacBook is : "OS X Yosemite vers. 10.10.5.

Does this mean I can't buy most of the 'new' apps because my MacBook is almost three years old? Is it possible to fix this through some update?

I would appreciate the help very much..
