Apple Watch Series 3 Phone# Confusion

Hi, I ordered the Apple Watch Series 3 (AWS3) cellular from one of the approved carriers. The carrier was emphatic that since this is a cellular device that it would need to have its own unique phone number.  They did not understand that the AWS3 is designed to receive calls via the same number as my iPhone.  The carrier's lack of knowledge about the AWS3 was actually quite appalling.

Now... is it possible that the AWS3 actually DOES receive a unique phone# but it just is not used because the AWS3 will receive incoming iPhone calls via NumberSync?  I'm just trying to anticipate if the ASW3 is going to be a headache to setup because the carrier screwed up.
