Old Macbook  running slow

My MacBook pro is running slow.  It is mid 2012 13 inch laptop.  2.5 GHz  Intel Coe 15. Running MAC Sierra.  I've run Dr. Cleaner Pro, which apple recommended, and it worked for a while but it seems to get slower except right after I run the program.  I really don't want to go and buy a new computer but this is getting difficult.  Please help.

I am pretty sure that that third party app is not "apple recommended"

Do I need to be using a product like Dr Cleaner?
