Updating iPad Air to iOS 11 wirelessly and upda...

How can I stop the iOS 11update. I have been waiting nearly 18 hours for it to finish, and it will not complete. I halted it by restarting the iPad about 3 hours ago, but when it restarts, the only option I have is to push home to finish updating, which just puts it back into the previous situation all over again. I have tried plugging it in to my Windows laptop attempt to use iTunes to update it, but in this mode, iTunes will not recognize that I have plugged the iPad in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your iPad is experiencing some difficulty wirelessly updating to iOS 11. It's important to keep your devices updated to the latest iOS available, and I'm happy to help you in doing so. 

First, try connecting your iPad to power in case the battery has reached a critical level. If there still doesn't seem to be any progress made while connected to power, the next step would be to boot your iPad into recovery mode and connect it to iTunes. You will be given an option to restore or update. If your iPad allows you to update without actually restoring, your data won't be affected. However, all of your data would be erased if your iPad requires a restore. Since your iPad is not recognized in iTunes and is stuck in the install process, you wouldn't be able to make a backup of your data at this point. If you have already backed up recently, you can restore that backup to your iPad once the recovery mode restore has completed. Also, data you're syncing to iCloud should sync back to your iPad as long as you sign back in with the same Apple ID.

If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up

If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:

1. Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, try to borrow one, or go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. 

2. While your device is connected, force it to restart. 

  • On an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery-mode screen.
  • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery-mode screen.
  • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery-mode screen.

3. Don't release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.


4. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.



iTunes will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3.
