How do I remove my Macintosh HD from my desktop...

All of the sudden my Macintosh HD icon is on my desktop and I don't know how that happened.  I'm still new to Mac and I'm not sure how to fix it.  Thanks.

Choose Preferences from the Finder's Go menu, open the General tab, and uncheck the box for it.

If you created an alias to it, move or delete that.

Not sure why having the icon there is a bad thing. It allows for easy access to your drive.

Anyway, you might find thsee useful.

Thank you for taking the time to answer me.  I'll check these links out and educate myself.  I don't know that it's a bad thing to have it on the desktop.  I thought I read somewhere that it's not good to have certain icons on the desktop.... maybe I'm wrong.

The hard drive icon is fine on the desktop; if you clutter your desktop with dozens of files, folders, and other things, your boot up time may become quite slow as the OS has to find/open all of these files/programs at once, so it is best to leave your desktop uncluttered. I've always had my hard drive icon showing in case I needed quick access.

I just bought a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) and the general tab is not located in the finder go menu. I prefer to

have my HD on my desktop. thanks in advance for help!

You click on Finder > Preferences and then indicate what you want to see in the little window:
