disc drive won’t read dvd’s anymore

my iMac is a 21.5-inch, mid 2011 model with stock 2.5 GHz intel core i5 processor and 4 GB DDR3 RAM…i am running OS Sierra (version 10.12.6), i have taken good care of my mac all these years and it’s returned the favor…but when i tried to play a DVD for my son to watch, it just hummed for a minute then spit it back out. the dvd wouldn’t show up in the finder or anything, and i tried using different dvd’s - all like new with no scratches or smudges - with the same result. please help.
