Bought an iPad for my son from a pawn shop

We purchased an iPad for our son at a pawn shop and it says it's linked to an iPhone through find my iPhone. It wants me to contact the original user for their id. I can't do that??? Is there a way around it????

No. Take it back and tell them that they sold it to you under fraudulent conditions and you want your money back.

Can Apple unlock it or do I need to try to take it back to the pawn shop?

Apple will not assist you in removing activation lock.  Only the original owner that enabled the lock can get support to do that.  Return it to the pawn shop is your best bet.
