macbook keyboard wearing badly

I've had my 12" Macbook since June and just noticed that my "A" key is wearing - badly. A large portion of the black has worn off so there's just a lit blob in the middle of the A. All the other keys seem okays but this makes me feel as though it's only a matter of time until the other keys begin to wear too. My laptop does get a lot of use but this seems pretty poor quality.

Anyone else have this problem? Not very happy, I must say.

Are you looking for a solution, or just whining?

"Anyone else have this problem?"

Sounds to me like he's identifying a legitimate issue and would like to know if this problem is pervasive or simply an isolated case. I think it's a serious enough issue to be of concern to all of us.

I just came on here to see if anyone else is experiencing this. I'm showing noticeable wear on the A, S, D and C keys.

And now that I see my photo blown up, I can see a bit of the black missing on the F key, too!

Since no one else has mentioned this problem, I think otherwise.  The customer should make an appointment with an Apple Genius, and discuss his options.  My guess is that he won't.

Actually, someone else has mentioned the problem--me! As I posted above with photo, it's happening to my MacBook, too.

I have this problem too, but much worse. The N and M keys are almost unrecognisable, and the A and S keys are wearing badly.

It's a shame because it's such a great computer and so well made in all other respects. For the record, I've never had this problem with any previous macbook before.

I've started using a rubber keyboard skin (specially designed for the Macbook 12") but it's ugly and I'd prefer to go back to the standard keyboard. A discussion on reddit seems to suggest that the damaged keycaps can be replaced. I'm going to book a genius bar appointment and see what they say.

My keys just don't work period (2015 Gold Macbook). Most stopped working within a month or two, it's been 5 now. Stuck tethered to a bluetooth keyboard at all times until I can get a break from work to mail it off to Apple to fix for a week or two which will never happen LOL.

I know this is really delayed (looking at when you originally posted this). I recently bought the new MacBook 12" at the beginning of September (3), and it is now the 29th - so about a month I've been using it and they keys aren't as bad as your's, however I realized how quickly the keyboard showed wear and tear. Where the keys were matte, they are now shiny. I think it depends on the oils that your hand produce. It's only plastic right, so it's unfortunately going to give into the wearing off process

Considering the price for this laptop, Apple should have over come this issue; design a different material for the keyboard or something. Or at least not make it matte. It looks terrible because only the keys used most often have the so called "shine" on them. The others, such as the F- buttons don't have any shine since they aren't used as much as keys like the space bar, enter, delete, etc.

I think it's a bigger issue than what has been let on. I've had 9 laptops from Apple since 1998, and this is only the second one that the letters have started to get messed up. All keyboards and spacebars can get shiny from oil from hands, but the letters should not start to wear.

Back in the Spring before my year warranty ran out, I had Apple replace the affected keys. They missed the N & M, and I didn't notice it until a few days later and did not have time in my schedule to go back before the warranty was up (I did not buy AppleCare because I plan on selling my MacBook as soon as the new MacBook Pro comes out).

I've attached a photo showing the state of my N & M keys. And during weekdays, I actually use an external keyboard, so this wear is taking place only on nights and weekends. I always try to keep my equipment in really good shape, but I have no doubt that this will affect my resell value in a few weeks.

Say hello to the same model, being used daily for 8+ hours of extensive typing for a period of 4 months.

Тhanks @bones86 for posting – I though I overworked on hardening my nails and even blamed myself a bit for it. I tried silicone cover – but it feels and looks bad, destroying all though-out keys back-strike-effect. Now on the step of painting all the worn part with permanent marker and covering with matte sticky tape, though it sound a bit strange as said for Apple devices which usually do not need these type of interventions..

Hope Apple will start some exchange campaign in a while after getting numerous complaints as it newer happened to any 3 of my previous Macs (I work same hours) – as obviously it is a material/production fault and keyboard now looks pretty awful and old, compared to overall fresh looks of computer.

Carl, why would you assume he won't?  You don't know him.  Why even post if your not going to be helpful?  It is a problem for the keyboards to wear quickly.  I just had mine replaced under AppleCare after 6 months of use.   The key caps are not easy to replace on your own and they are not cheep either.  Recommend you bring it in if it's under an AppleCare warranty.  It seems like these keys are not as durable as the previous generations.   This could be due to the material decisions they had to make to get the keyboard thinner.

By way of follow-up, yesterday I sold the MacBook from which I had photographed the keyboard a few posts up. Even after getting a number of the keys replaced in the Spring, many of the same keys were already showing new wear. I now have the new MacBook Pro. The keyboard has been improved somewhat in that I make less errors with it, but it feels like it's made out of the same material as that of the MacBook. So, I expect to eventually show some wear here, too.
