Invisible cursor in Time Machine

Invisible cursor in Time Machine

New 15" MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra ver 10.12.3 and a G Drive SSD USB-C external drive for Time Machine, and a Magic Mouse 2. Being an author and illustrator, about the only applications I use (besides Mail and Safari) are TextEdit, Gimp, and Sigil. I do not use iCloud nor whatever that game center thing is. I got this new computer because my old iMac is dying.

When I first got the computer about a week ago there were no problems, but this last Sunday evening the invisible cursor in Time Machine issue showed up.

Talk about flying blind, when I enter Time Machine the cursor disappears. I have an open ticket with Apple Support, but they seem as stymied as I am. One of the things that confuses them is that when they look at the issue with remote desktop, the cursor is visible. Have reinstalled the OS and the new update, disassociated the Magic Mouse 2, run virus scans, and a number of other investigative steps Apple Support has walked me through, all without success.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Thanks. Your observations while operating in "Safe Mode" implicates software external to macOS itself.

To help isolate the cause, refer to About System Information on your Mac - Apple Support and scroll down to the screenshot below "System Information opens to a system report for your Mac". In it, note the column on the left, which has an entry under Software named Extensions. Click Extensions.

The right column will be populated with a list of kernel extensions, most of which are supplied by Apple. Clicking the column on the right with the heading Obtained from will order the list separating non-Apple kernel extensions from those part of macOS. It is normal to find a number of non-Apple kernel extensions, but they are the ones deserving additional scrutiny since they may be causing or contributing to the disappearing cursor problem.

Their names are likely to be cryptic but if you want help identifying them, please write back. Include their names or a screenshot of that window.

Please restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" and determine if the same behavior occurs, or not. To do that follow the instructions in Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support.

run virus scans

Doing that is a waste of time and can only cause trouble. Uninstall whatever you are using according to its instructions.

Yes John, That's one of the things Apple Support had me do. The cursor can be seen in Safe Mode as well as when they connect remote desktop. I did so again this evening, with the same results, and went further to follow the additional instructions in the document you noted. I have tried removing Gimp and Sigil which were present before the issue, which had no effect.

About the time the issue occurred I had reregistered Little Snitch, so I also uninstalled it (involves more than moving app to trash as you likely know). This had no effect on the issue either.

And yes, running a virus scan can cause problems. One app, that is available at Apple's app store, told me to delete some Apple files. I uninstalled it quickly.

Worse comes to worse I can always restart in safe mode if I need the cursor to select and restore an older version of a file :-(

Thank you for responding.

Well you got me there, albeit indirectly :-)

I called Apple support to help me interpret the non-Apple  extensions, and they bumped me up to someone that could. The person first wanted to view the issue, and with remote desktop noticed in Time Machine that there was a small cursor inside a larger cursor. I was directed to change the cursor back to normal in System Preferences an reboot. Now I can see a cursor in Time Machine when their remote desktop isn't connected.

They don't know why cursor size should affect visibility in Time Machine on my MacBook though, so I generated a system report which they are forwarding to engineering.

So, I'm back to seeing a cursor in time machine, and Apple engineering has the issue to scratch their head over :-) Overall, I can get back to writing and illustrating, and am happy to do so with my new MacBook.

Thank you for responding, and steering me in a productive direction :-)

Great! Thanks for the update.

Forwarding your system report to Engineering will be very helpful. I don't know why cursor size would affect its visibility either. I tried to duplicate what you did with an enlarged cursor, but the Time Machine interface worked as expected. It may be a hardware-specific bug.

Resolved :-) After studying the system report, Apple engineering had me trash a Time Machine com.apple file in Macintosh HD/Library. Now I've increased the cursor size back to something these old eyes can see, and it's visible in Time Machine.

Thanks to all for the great support with an elusive problem :-) Loving this new 15" MacBook Pro.

I Had the same problem but found that I was using a larger than normal cursor. When I put it to small or default size the cursor was visible in Time Machine. It's in Acessability>Screen. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with a brand new MacBook Pro. It was very frustrating until I realised that the cursor size was the trigger. My cursor also froze when opening Eyetv by Elgato. I still have my old MacBook (2010) which runs like a dream so it was very frustrating to upgrade, and get a glitch. Thanks to those people who worked on this issue.

I had the same issue today.  To resolve it, I reduced the size of the cursor to just between the first peg and second peg of the cursor size scale under display, cursor size.  If you don't go closer to the left side (Normal) of the scale the cursor will disappear again.  For now it seems to be working for me.
